Tips:

  • Wherever possible, copy existing pages and change the content within (using the 'Edit Source' button above), rather than write new pages from scratch or copying directly from a word document.
  • Aim for consistency in style, format etc across the whole wiki, and especially across similarly situated pages.
  • Wherever possible, include links to elsewhere in the wiki to build the internal web architecture (ie if you mention the Glossary, make it a bolded hyperlink, and if you make two pages that relate to each other, include cross-link to easily move between them.
  • Document everything. We can always delete later, and it's better to know what people are thinking and have the discussion out in the open, together, rather than repeat the same interactions over and over privately with nothing to show for it.
  • Populate your MyPage page with pride and ownership.
  • Customize your MyDashboard page with links to all of the various pages and other resources that you use regularly to have them at your fingertips, reduce the learning curve for the wiki, and increase your likelihood of regularly using the platform (it will initially take some conscious effort and investment before it becomes second-nature - and it will).
  • Don't be afraid to create new pages if you're unsure - they can always be improved, integrated into other pages or moved around later with help from more experienced community members.
  • Don't be afraid to edit existing pages - changes can always be unwound later.
  • However, as a general rule, it is better and more polite not to delete entire pages or substantial sections that other people have written without first discussing with them and the Glossary team. Add, don't subtract.
  • When creating new sub-pages in what is or will likely become a set or list of similar pages (ie discussions and learning communities), number them rather than give them unique names. You can put the names in the page heading, and it preserves flexibility for changing names in the future while avoiding redundancy and overlap.
  • To promote general wiki-hygiene, adopt a "if you see it, fix it" mentality towards minor typographical and formatting errors - usually it only takes a few seconds, and then it's done.
  • Don't be afraid to be messy - if you don't have time to complete something, leave questions, notes, and comments at the bottom of unfinished pages so others with capacity can pick up from where you left off.
  • This is a self-driven community project - rather than waiting for M3 OrgTeam members to reach out, set your own calendar reminder(s) to periodically check in on pages that you are responsible for, make any necessary edits, and then let the team know what you've done.
